I am Sorry, I Have a Date With Flowers

“I don’t answer phone calls when I am working with flowers. I am jealous of my time with them,” says Kreetta Järvenpää with a twinkle in her eye.

Kreetta is a professional photographer, artist, and one of the two founders of Floral Fan. She has been photographing flowers for ten years now and has developed a visual language that she calls Nordic Baroque. It incorporates a myriad of floral details and dark, moody backgrounds, while the soft northern light surrounds it all.

“Details interest me the most. They make the difference—literally. Like the petals which turn from fresh to wilted. Their texture changes. They get wrinkled, some fall while others dry beautifully.”

Four years ago, while working on her Flora Favola exhibition, Kreetta accidentally forgot some tulips standing in flower frogs without water. The next day, instead of feeling disappointed, she fell in love with what she saw.

“Wilting tulips—they were just gorgeous. I love to see how flowers keep changing and how they can look totally different from one moment to another. I think they develop their own personality too. Their whole appearance changes. It gets more edgy, and full of character. That is why I love these wrinkled heroes of mine. More Punk.”
