Dear Artful Flower Lover,
Welcome to the first issue of Floral Fan.
In Garden Story, we visit a beautiful garden in Vantaa, nurtured by gardener Peter Joy who may well be Finland’s only iris breeder, alongside his colleague Pirkko Kahila. Together, they have created more than a dozen new iris varieties.
Art Story remembers the British artist and plantsman Cedric Morris (1889–1982). He was once celebrated even more for his love of flowers than his art, and he had a particular passion for bearded irises.
In Floral Album, photographer and Floral Fan co-founder Kreetta Järvenpää turns her lens on… irises, of course. She has studied the fascinating murky shades of Iris sibirica from the collection of Mustila Garden.
For those inspired to grow their own, Ask a Pro series features floral designer India Hurst. She shares her top tips for cultivating bearded irises as cut flowers.
And there’s more beyond the theme. We visit Finnish designer, artist Erja Hirvi at her summer cottage in Southern Finland. Known for her distinctive floral patterns and artworks for companies such as Marimekko, Erja is one of Finland’s most renowned pattern and textile designers.
Just subscribe — and enjoy.
PS. Don’t forget to peek into the Flower Market. You’ll find some lovely things there too.
