First Issue is Available
Floral Fan is now available online for subscribes. The first issue of Floral Fan is about irises.
Floral Fan is a new, independent online magazine that brings together flowers and gardens with art and cultural history.
We believe that flowers, gardens, and art belong together, and that the connection between them has always existed. While plants are essential to human survival, they also provide opportunities for experiencing beauty and aesthetic pleasure. The cultural meanings associated with flowers in particular are often personal, yet widely shared.
Floral Fan is created by artist and photographer Kreetta Järvenpää and journalist Anna Varakas. Based in Finland, they have worked together as a photographer–journalist team since 2017. Their work has appeared in several gardening magazines in Finland and internationally.
Anna Varakas: “Over the years, we realized that some of our story ideas did not naturally fit within the framework of existing gardening magazines. We therefore began developing the idea of creating a new publication that would take the diverse connections between flowers and art as its starting point.”
Kreetta Järvenpää: “Through our travels, we have had the opportunity to visit many remarkable gardens and to experience how a garden can become a form of art. These experiences stayed with us and eventually inspired the idea of creating a magazine that approaches gardens from a slightly different perspective than more general publications.”
Floral Fan publishes two issues per year and aims to offer visually engaging, thoughtfully curated and even unexpected content. The first issue focuses on irises and features a distinctive collection of bearded irises created by gardener and plant breeder Peter Joy, a floral art album of iris-inspired images by artist Kreetta Järvenpää, and practical guidance from India Hurst, a specialist in growing bearded irises as cut flowers, among other topics.
Floral Fan is available online by subscription at www.floralfan.com. The online magazine is published in English in order to serve an international readership.
